Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

The lunar eclipse will fall on the winter solstice this year!
Since it will be possible to see from 5 continents we have a chance to
see it here in Paris between 7h30-8h30 Tuesday morning, before it gets
too light.
It only took 370-odd years to have this chance, hope we can see it!

http://www.aolnews.com/2010/12/19/lunar-eclipse-december-2010-falls-on-winter-solstice/

"This year's event will take 3 hours and 38 minutes. The eclipse
begins on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 1:33 a.m. ET, according to NASA. At
that time, Earth's shadow will appear as a dark-red mark at the edge
of the moon. It will take about an hour for the mark to expand and
cover the entire moon. Totality begins at 2:41 a.m. and lasts for 72
minutes.

During totality, the moon will be entirely immersed in the Earth's
shadow, but the moon will not disappear from sight. Instead, it should
appear to turn coppery red, as Earth's atmosphere refracts sunlight
into the shadow.

Since the Earth's shadow is cone-shaped and extends out into space for
about 844,000 miles, sunlight will be strained through a sort of
"double sunset," all around the rim of the Earth, into its shadow and
then onto the moon, according to Space.com.

If you're planning to dash out for only a quick minute, NASA
recommends that you choose this one: 3:17 a.m. ET. That's when the
moon will be in deepest shadow, displaying the most fantastic shade of
copper red."

Holiday newsletter - décembre

Happy Holidays all Friends at the Centre de Yoga du Marais!  (en français dessous)
It's year's end and birthday time for the yoga centre.  We are celebrating 9 years this coming Saturday, December 4.  Many of you started your yoga journey here. Many started teaching here and I'm thankful and always happy when I am teaching and introducing new students to their first yoga class.  Nine years of history is something to celebrate!

I am offering a meditation and yoga class on Christmas Day, Saturday 11h00-13h00.  (This will give you time to get to your Christmas meal and the friends you will be celebrating with.)  I will be on winter holiday in Italy from December 28-January 7.  I will be back to teach on Saturday, January 8.  The rates for my class cards have not gone up and you still have 4 months to use them.

The centre will be closed from Dec 23-Jan 3.  In my absence, my classes will be held by Caroline Dupuy and Amanda Fuzes from Sydney, Australia.  Some of you may remember Amanda Fuzes from several years ago when she came and taught us an energetic "Aussie"-style workshop.  Amanda has offered to teach the level II/III on Tues and Thurs at 4p, Jan 4 and Jan 6.    You can use your cards for her classes and I encourage you to come and meet her.  She teaches a super body and mind awakening practice.

Some changes to the schedule:
Hatha I on Thurs from 10-11h30 and Hatha I Friday 12h15 is cancelled.
My Monday evening class is now a level I restorative class.
I will continue leading the prenatal and Mommy and Me program, for the time being.  The schedule remains the same.  Mommy and Me is finished for December. Registration begins now for January 14 for the new moms and babies who are ready.

Please remember the community class!  I will teach on Sunday, December 5 and19 and then the next class will be Sunday, January 10.  The class is only 10 euros and a wonderful way to show your community support and care.  The teachers give this class in service.
Also, watch the blog for my annual January de-tox workshop.
Please check the blog for any additional changes in fees from your favorite teachers.

I wish you all the warmest and my best for this holiday season and into the new year.  Let your light shine and I will see you soon.
Namaste,
Michelle

Namaste,
Michelle

November-December news

Hello Yogis!
I have delayed my return to Paris by a week and will be back to
teaching on Saturday morning 10h00, 20 November.

November's meditation will be 21 November at 19h30. This is offered
at the centre as usual.

A little reminder about the next workshop on 28 November Sunday,
13h30-16h30. The practice will be a heart opening practice. Workshop
fee 35 euros by reservation.
Regardless of your body type, or level of flexibility, there's a
backbend out there for you! A backbend that will leave you feeling
refreshed, open-hearted, and grounded. Backbends help to elevate
mood, improve immunity, increase spine flexibility and strengthen the
back. But many of us are resistant to backbends because they feel
unfamiliar or our shoulders won't open up to welcome them. In this
workshop we will learn the key actions to backbending safely so that
these heart-opening postures can become a joyous and pain-free part of
your daily practice.

Also save these dates!
Dec 4 from 18h30 the Centre de Yoga du Marais is celebrating it's 9th
birthday!
We will have a lovely buffet at the centre and you are welcome to drop
in anytime and catch up with some of your old friends, new friends,
too, and toast the centre into another year!
Please rsvp by November 30.

Students have also been inquiring about December classes and I will be
happy to give another workshop on December 18. Inversions, to help us
deal with holiday baggage? In any event, I will be giving the
community class that morning.
Also, I am happy to give you a Sunday class on December 25, Christmas
Day. Please let me know if you would like to have a special candle
light practice on this special day.
I will be away again from December 28-January 7. The centre will be
closed from Dec 27-Jan 2.

See you soon!

Michelle

October-November news

Bonjour à tous! (English below)

Hello Everyone,
Creating Happy Hips

I am giving a yoga workshop this Sunday, Oct 24 from 13h30-16h30 on opening the hips. We are continuing with our work we started in September but feel to join in anytime. 35 euros.

If you experience low back pain, sore knees or have difficulty balancing, opening the hips creates a feeling of freedom in the body, Hip openers unlock the lower spine and begin to create the space for the next focus, opening the heart area which will be the theme of the November 28, workshop. This Sunday, we will tune into the fine balance needed between strength and flexibility in the lower body region. We will interweave deep hip, hamstring & thigh opening postures within the strength of a flowing practice.

I will be away from Oct 26-Nov 11. I may be teaching the Thursday evening level I upon my return on Nov 11. In the event I don't, you have the center's excellent teachers who are covering my classes for me so please do come and let them keep your practice alive and healthy. I am looking forward to sharing with you when I get back.

Mommy and Me on October 29, is cancelled. This week only.

Take good care of yourselves!

Michelle

classes, workshops, teacher training

Hello students and friends of the Yoga Marais. (version français dessous)

I just wanted to remind you that there is a workshop this Sunday, September 26, and I still have a few places if you're thinking about giving your practice a good jump start. We will be focusing on stability from the ground up and opening the hips. (So you can take those leaps!)
It is a 3-hr workshop which will include some yoga philosophy, too.
Time: 13h30-16h30. Cost 35 euros.

Meditation is also this Sunday. Our one-hour guided sitting starts at 19h30 and we have a pot luck dinner afterward for those who would like to stay and picnic.

New day classes!
Christine Chauvancy is joining the staff at Centre de Yoga du Marais. Christine is a thoroughly accomplished teacher and recent graduate from the Yoga Immersion/TT program. She will teach 2 morning classes a week. Monday and Thursday mornings 10h00-11h30.
Reminder for those free during the day, we have day classes every day, mornings and lunch time, too:

10-11h30 Monday with Christine
10-11h30 Tuesday with Laetitia Yoga with Pilates
12h30-13h30 Tuesday with Caroline
10-11h30 Thursday with Christine
10h30-12h00 Friday with Christine (prenatal)
12h30-14h00 Friday with Caroline
14h00-15h00 Friday with Michelle Mommy and Me
11h30-13h00 Sunday Open Community Class,
a nice opportunity to introduce yoga to those you care about.

We appreciate your passing this on to your friends!

Setting sights to October.
I will be traveling to the U.S. and among my activities there is to pick up the textbooks and materials for the next Teacher Training/Yoga Immersion program, 2011.
I would like to have a better idea of how many packets to pick up so if you are still thinking about next year's program, you can contact me anytime to set up a little interview. The class will be limited to 12 (absolute maximum) and I can safely say there will be a TT next year!

Thank you all so much for your interest in all the programs at the Centre!

Warmly,
Michelle

10-11h30 lundi - Christine
10-11h30 mardi - Laetitia Yoga et Pilates
12h30-13h30 mardi - Caroline
10-11h30 jeudi - Christine
10h30-12h00 vendredi - Christine (prenatal)
12h30-14h00 vendredi - Caroline
14h00-15h00 vendredi - Michelle ‘’Mommy and Me’’
11h30-13h00 dimanche - Community class

Merci à tous pour votre intérêt dans les programmes du centre ;

Chaleureusement,
Michelle

Quoi de neuf...la rentrée 2010

Hello Everyone! English version below

namaste,
Michelle

Hello Everyone!

C'est la rentrée

I hope your summer holidays, even if they were short ones have left you refreshed and ready for another restart.
Reflecting on my time off, I noticed that it truly was a summer I just got to be more and do less. Of course when you come back, see the Centre and the website and blog, things got done but I seemed to be able to appreciate and be in the moment of it all and appreciate the work of everyone around me. Then, I realized, this can happen anytime, even when September begins and all our family, work and our responsibility 'to-do lists' pile up. It is easy to let being slip away. Also appreciation. This is when our yoga practice steps in to anchor us and tether us to those quieter moments we've been fortunate to notice.

I am happy to say the staff at the Centre, 10-strong this year, are ready to welcome you back to your practice and to touching those moments of grace when we can just be in the midst of all the busy-ness that awaits us in the rentr
ée.

For you, the easiest thing to do is to click to the site and blog for updates, full class and workshop schedules, etc. I will be updating from time to time, so if you have been away, please visit the blog. Here, you can also meet the other teachers at the centre, read essays posted and get information on yoga immersion programs and retreats, too.

Workshops

I will be teaching a 3-part workshop series this fall, over 3 Sundays, titled, Making friends with yourself and your practice. How to work with your body's weight, to take the time to work mindfully, to go deep and touch those areas we can open with acceptance. These three workshops will explore ways we can release the hamstrings and hips, open and stabilize your shoulders, and strengthen your core with the proper use of bandha, developing confidence in all areas of your practice. We will explore the teachings of Raja Yoga (Royal Path); vairagya (non-attachment) and ahimsa (non-injury) which help move us away from our negative feelings and habitual patterns that block our growth. These teachings help us avoid injury and give us the potential to open to grace.

September 26 13h30-16h30
October 24 13h30-16h30
November 28 13h30-16h30.
Workshops are priced at 35 euros or 95 euros for all three. A reservation and deposit is required, please.

These workshops provide the opportunity to learn more about hatha yoga and its philosophy, all you need is a curiosity to learn more and an understanding to work at your own pace. For teachers, these workshops fulfill the required hours for continuing education.

I am looking forward to seeing you all back for another exciting year of learning, for all of us!
namaste,
Michelle

Lucy and my yoga practice are and forever will be inextricably linked.  It was 16 years ago that I took up a regular yoga practice and adopted a puppy, all in the same month.  I needed to change my life.  Little did I know that I adopted a tiny witness to all the big life changes to come since that cold February day in New York.

I was blue, yoga helped me witness and accept that and having a puppy to take care of cheered me.  My intent that February was to take her to visit a friend who had been severely depressed for quite some time to show her the transformation a puppy brings.  Unfortunately, I was too late and Maria decided to take her life that cold February alone in her apartment.  I had Lucy to comfort me.  This was the beginning of how much a comfort she has been, by my side for long walks, well mostly pulling at the leash as far in front as she could race me, and at the side of my yoga mat waiting for the next move.  Dogs love yoga because you are on the floor with them and at eye level, too.  They don't need to learn yoga.  They are yoga.  Puppies somehow know your mat is not a boobie pad but a sacred time put aside to go inside and feel.  When I was on my back for reclining poses Lucy laid across my belly, even when she got bigger and her legs just splayed in all directions.  When I was on my belly for supine poses she tucked herself into the small of my back and kept rolling off when I deepened my breath.  She liked that.  Down dog is a favorite because puppies and dogs slobber your face.  Thus, started a 16 year love affair of yoga for the both of us.

What Lucy taught me?  There is no difficulty that can't be put into perspective with the help of a good long walk.  When someone comes in the room, run over and be happy to see them.  When you feel from them they are not keen to be with you, sit patiently by their side and wait for them to get over it.  Lucy was quite insistent with this.  She didn't have a mean bone in her body and therefore  couldn't understand anyone not liking her.  She came on a little strong for my husband-to-be's taste but she made him warm up to her.  Michele became one her biggest champions.  People were charmed by her, in fact she is responsible for so many dogs getting adopted.  When my friends met her, several adopted dogs of their own, several who never thought they would own a dog.  My dad went ahead and adopted two.  Among my already dog-friends, our ties just grew deeper.  Lucy cemented my people friendships and drew our community close.  Just a few months after my mother-in-law met her after our move to Europe, she rescued a fox terrier, Spike.  Lucy and her friend enjoyed a number of summers running through forests and countryside in Italy and Germany.  Lucy romped through summer vacations on beaches on the Adriatic and all over a remote island in Croatia.  My husband and I were her pack.

Dogs inhabit the principles of yoga philosophy presented by Patanjali millennia ago.  They are friendly to the happy, patient and even long-suffering to the unkind and compassionate to those troubled.  There is a practice in our yoga, pratipaksha bhavana, replacing a negative thought with a positive one.  Dogs do this instantaneously even if they've been punished.  Lucy would look at me with those eyes that said OK, that's over with, when do we get to eat?  No grudges.  It's all about the present moment and present moment with a cocker spaniel is usually, I am hungry, everything's good.

We shared a spirit of adventure.  She had to be a traveler because right after I picked her up from the pet store she went into my dance bag into rehearsal.  For 16 years, her biggest joy was seeing her travel bag.  Second biggest joy, jumping really high.  Her favorite part of dance class, which she was allowed to attend, were the big leaps across the floor when she would start to sing with the piano and try to leap with us.  At home when I was not there she practiced her leaps onto the kitchen counter to see where I hid the loaf of bread.  She could also get to the fruit bowl and peel bananas.  Her New York vet doubted she was a cocker and leaned more toward springer until she was fully grown.  I bought her a frisbee that smelled like dog treats and she learned how to jump and fly and catch it very quickly.

Having a dog is being reminded that life is joyful, all the time.  Joy is always there, sometimes it is covered up a bit and sometimes a lot, but it's still there.  Perhaps in some way she is reminding my friend Maria of this now, as the great teacher Lucy was.
As I write this I am traveling to London, she is not at my feet.  She is in my heart.
I love you, Lucy.
